Standing Tall: The Great Slouch Epidemic

By Dr. Richard Yoshimura

Why posture has quietly become one of the biggest health challenges facing today’s families.

From toddlers to grandparents, a “Great Slouch Epidemic” is sweeping through daily life, with screen-focused habits causing chronic neck pain, headaches, and reduced mobility for Calgary families. To a large extent, technology drives this, and this is a challenge, as our bodies are designed for movement. This “new normal” acts as a roadblock to overall wellness, but there is a solution.

At Glow, we often talk about enhancing the human experience. To me, that’s what better posture is really about. It’s not simply about reducing aches and pains. It’s about breathing more freely, moving more comfortably, playing with your children, exploring the outdoors and saying “yes” to the moments that make life memorable. It’s about giving ourselves—and the next generation—the opportunity to experience life with greater comfort, confidence and joy.

The good news is that posture is shaped by daily habits rather than genetics alone, meaning small, consistent changes can rebuild a healthier frame. To learn how to achieve this, read the full article by Dr. Richard here; https://www.livelifebetter.ca/standing-tall-part-1-the-great-slouch-epidemic/

It just got easier to find a time that works for your schedule. We are excited to announce expanded massage therapy availability at Glow. We have opened more times to book in with your favorite massage therapists and also added to our team to allow for more openings with male and female massage therapists. It’s now easier than ever to find an appointment that fits your schedule.

Or consider trying something new! Our acupuncturist, Michaella, offers unique treatment combinations that pair acupuncture with reflexology or Shiatsu (a Japanese therapeutic massage technique). Most of these combination sessions are eligible to be claimed under your acupuncture benefits and are now available in 30-90 minute sessions.

Welcome To The Team Awilla!

We would like to welcome Awilla to our Glow team!

Awilla, Registered Massage Therapist, holding a triangle yoga pose on a forest trail beside a mountain lake

Hi, I’m Awilla, a Registered Massage Therapist who attended MaKami’s 3000 hour Advanced Clinical Massage Therapy program in Calgary. I came to this work through a deep curiosity about natural health and a background in yoga, which sparked a desire to understand the body’s anatomy more intimately, particularly how it moves, how it holds tension and how it heals.

My philosophy is rooted in a simple belief; the body is wise. It speaks to us constantly through sensation, tension, fatigue and ease. My goal in every session is to help you slow down enough to actually listen to it. Whether you’re managing physical discomfort or simply carrying the weight of a busy life, I want you to leave feeling more at home in yourself, clearer, more grounded and more connected to your own inner knowing.

I work with Swedish, deep tissue, myofascial and stretching techniques, with a genuine interest in the intersection of bodywork and whole-person wellbeing. I will also be participating in Lomi Lomi training this fall. Lomi Lomi is a traditional Hawaiian healing art rooted in the belief that true wellness encompasses the alignment of body, mind and spirit.

Awilla is available for appointments on Wednesdays, Fridays, & Saturdays!
