We would like to welcome our newest Registered Massage Therapists, Peter and Sara!

Peter brings with him 20+ years of rehab therapy, a lifetime of martial arts, bodybuilding, strongman competitions and powerlifting.
Peter is continually learning, has studied MVA and stroke rehab therapy and his latest and greatest, Chirodontics! (Chirodontics can help with migraine/headache relief, TMJ issues, dental issues, face and skull reshaping & pain syndromes, whiplash/concussion symptoms, and more.)
Practicing massage has been a natural transition from the rehab and Personal Training role he’s been fulfilling for many years. Both modalities are very beneficial and add to his capabilities as a massage therapist.
Peter’s main style is Deep Tissue but has been known to give great facial, scalp, hand and foot massages. His continuing focus will be on headaches, concussions, and TMJD treatments through Chirodontics as above, and later, deep myofascial release.

Chiropractic Care: Changing the Brain on Back Pain

By Dr. Richard Yoshimura

chiropractic calgary dr yoshimura

Here’s something cool: chiropractic adjustments don’t just change spines… they actually change the brain.
A recent fMRI study looked at people with chronic low back pain before and after spinal adjustments and what they found was fascinating.

Here’s the big picture:
Researchers scanned the brains of chronic low back pain patients before their first adjustment, after one session, and again after six sessions. They compared those scans to healthy controls who didn’t get adjusted.

What they saw:
After just one adjustment, patients had greater activity in areas like the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (big role in pain perception and decision-making).
After six adjustments, they saw increased activity in the posterior cingulate and inferior frontal gyrus—both connected to the brain’s “default mode network,” which is tied to pain processing and emotional regulation.
Brain Activity After SMT.

Why this matters for you:
This is evidence that adjustments don’t just reduce pain by “mechanics.” They literally rewire how the brain processes pain. That’s a powerful way to explain what we do beyond structure and posture—it’s neurology in action.

Take home message:
“Adjustments don’t just move bones; they help retrain the way your brain processes pain.”
“That’s why many people feel relief not just physically, but also in how their body responds to stress and discomfort.”
